Resume'
Autobiography

Born and reared in the farmland of a small Tennessee River town called Savannah, Lonnie Rich realized at an early age that he loved art and the creative processes of making art. Drawing was, and still is, a favorite language of expression because of its directness and its immediacy. Majoring in art while attending Hardin County High School, he enjoyed working with and helping his peers in art class and made the decision to become an art educator. His ultimate goal was to someday retire from teaching and to pursue the life of a full-time artist. After being graduated in 1977 from Austin Peay State University with a B.F.A. in Art Education, he taught senior high school at Hewitt-Trussville High School outside Birmingham, AL. The experience was both challenging and rewarding. However, in 1984 Lonnie decided to return to school for further studies in art. He received a graduate assistantship to the University of Alabama and entered the Art Education Program. After an intensive year-long study, Lonnie was graduated in 1985 with a Master of Arts in Art Education with a focus in painting. Moving to the Birmingham area, he taught private art classes at Artist’s Studio in Hoover, AL and also worked in visual merchandising for Parisian in the Galleria in Riverchase. Missing the excitement of teaching in the classroom, in 1987 he applied for an art instructor’s position and was hired by Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, AL. During his 18 year tenure at LBWCC, he was Chairman of the Art Program, Art Instructor, and Art Gallery Director. In 2005, he retired after 25 years of service in secondary and post-secondary education.
Lonnie has now turned his focus and energies toward his life-long dream of being a full-time artist. Residing in the Holley-Navarre area, he set up an art studio on the first floor of his East Bay home. However, the art studio was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. With the loss of all his traditional art supplies, tools, and equipment, the road to recovery has been a challenge. Forced to revaluate his traditional creative options, Lonnie began to search the shoreline of East Bay and the local river banks in Santa Rosa County for both materials and creative inspiration. With effort and patience, he began to collect various heart pine knots, cedar driftwood, and various stones that have been twisted, beaten, and tumbled through years of exposure to the elements. Lonnie is now learning to listen to each piece of wood and stone to discover its narrative and its creative potential as an artwork. The history and the evolution of each piece of wood and stone are unique. Their successful creative union requires time and careful consideration. Lonnie’s philosophies of seeking balance in life have a tremendous influence on his development as a working artist. His art training and his teaching experiences are important attributes that have helped him develop a tenacious attention to detail, a requisite for being a successful artist.
