Artist's Statement

In 2006 I began working on a series of artworks called "Listening to Wood and Stone." Each piece is created from heart pine, cedar, and other drift woods that I find along the creeks and rivers of Northwest Florida, especially the north shores of East Bay in Santa Rosa County. Once the wood is thoroughly cleaned and dried, I utilize the movement, textures, and colors offered by the wood, respecting the general form of the original mass nature has provided.  Minimal carving on the surface allows me to add additional visual interest when needed. I then combine the wood with a tumbled river rock, or a semi-precious stone, to create figurative sculptures to explore a broad range of narratives involving spiritual and human conditions and the positive, joyful aspects of life.
